Main features

Smart AI Commanders
Ultimate General: Gettysburg does not use “AI gameplay cheats” because it does not need them. The game’s difficulty is accomplished only by nine distinctive AI personalities, each with their own advantages and special skills. AI Commanders are able to evaluate and gain tactical superiority in real time, reacting according to their different commanding skills, aggressively or defensively, heroically or cunningly and resemble different, competent human players.

Each one of the AI generals is a formidable, non-scripted opponent who can actively try to flank you, secure strategic locations with artillery, keep reserves and reinforce areas that it attacks or defends. The AI will try to win the battle with tactics that fit to its personality. For example a defensive opponent may not attack ferociously in the first engagement and progressively advance its forces in the next battles.

Multi-Day Dynamic Battle
On the morning of July 1st 1863, the two armies meet near Gettysburg. Reinforcements arrive from historically accurate directions as the battle progresses, however, random events, delays and tactical differences are always a possibility that can change the results of each engagement compared to history.

Can you re-enact Pickett’s Charge? What if Lee attacked the center of the Union Army early in the morning of July 2nd of 1863 instead of attempting to flank the extreme left in the afternoon? What would happen if Meade counter-attacked on July 4th 1863? These questions and more can be answered within the game engine of Ultimate General: Gettysburg.

The battle is dynamically fought in time phases and can last up to 4 days. Each day can be separated by up to 3 time phases and the armies’ condition and positioning on the map are saved.

According to battle events, you have the possibility to take decisions that can change the tide of the battle based on your prior tactical prowess. For example, when leading the Confederates, on the morning of July 2nd, you can choose to attack at Cemetery Hill and not make a delayed flanking maneuver at Peach Orchard… if you have managed to take Seminary Ridge the previous day! You can even choose to defend and wait for your AI opponent to take the initiative between days. These choices greatly increase the number of possible battle outcomes and challenges.

Detailed Map of Gettysburg
Utilizing satellite images and historical maps, every major location, house, ridge and hill are depicted as accurately as possible within the game’s unique art style. If you are an American Civil War enthusiast, you will be especially happy to notice the amount of precision and information that the map provides. Not only will you be able to better understand the historical layout of the map, you will also be able to make use of each location and landmark in battle, thanks to the simulation of cover, concealment, terrain and high ground in the game.

Historically Accurate Forces and Leaders
Ultimate General: Gettysburg includes the full order of battle for the Union Army of the Potomac and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Unit sizes range from the small artillery batteries to vast infantry brigades with cavalry and skirmishers in between.

All brigades have troop numbers and differing competencies based on historical facts. Additionally, all artillery battery numbers and types are correctly simulated. Lastly, major generals and officers actively participate in the battlefield to organize and support the armies and will also appear in after action battle reports to help you monitor battle progress.

Easy Controls & Unit Self-Awareness
Drag simple movement arrows to command large forces easily. Units do not need your micromanagement because they are able to act on their own initiative and re-align, switch targets, withdraw and form battle lines without player input. Consequently, you are able to give generic commands to your units and can rely on them to fight efficiently without the need for “babysitting”.

Advanced Line of Sight
Elevation and obstructions will affect unit visibility realistically. Units may make use of concealment and cover to survive artillery barrages, stage ambushes and more, but beware – the AI will attempt to do the same to you. The units enter or exit the Fog of War gradually with a fade in/out effect that helps you perceive their hiding and course seamlessly.

Numerous Tactical Factors
In Ultimate General: Gettysburg, you will realize that army units are not “machines” that blindly follow orders, but will need to conserve strength and courage for decisive battle actions. Every basic tactical element that is expected for a strategy game is incorporated into gameplay. Most importantly, morale is affected by many factors including flank or rear attacks, casualties, volley shocks, artillery fire and fatigue.

Furthermore, every inch of the map has a strategic role. Sloping, terrain type and obstructions will affect unit movement realistically. Elevations, ridges and hills provide excellent firing positions and give increased sight, morale and accuracy to troops stationed there.

By placing your units close to each other, they become more resilient to charges and flank attacks but get more vulnerable to projectile fire. Thus, forcing your enemy to keep his lines dense while you shell him with artillery can be a valid tactic. As the condition of your units changes dynamically during the battle, the effectiveness of your whole army is affected. For example, units fire more coordinated volleys when they have high morale and have more discipline and tight formations.

These and many more deep gameplay mechanics are packed into a simple and intuitive GUI that aims to ease the game experience for the player without overwhelming with complex statistics.

Custom Battles
Different AI Commanders and the dynamic multi-day battle will provide countless ways to enjoy the Battle of Gettysburg every time you replay it. The replayability increases with additional custom battles. As you fight the Multi-Day Battle of Gettysburg, you can unlock dozens of speculative scenarios that you may play afterwards for quick battles, either randomized or with full unit strength and default army deployments.

Multiplayer Experience
The game currently offers 18 maps for 1vs1 matches and is continuously improved according to user feedback.

*iOS Differences with the PC version
The game was redesigned from the ground up to provide good usability and playability on tablets and smartphones. The dynamic campaign is replaced by 10 special missions for each side. The user interface is enhanced and more adequate for handheld devices. The tactical combat and its features were tuned only slightly in order to experience an alternative level of strategic depth and challenge on iPad and iPhone. Multiplayer is not available.

Ultimate General: Gettysburg was developed by Game Labs and designed by Nick Thomadis, known for his successful and popular “DarthMod” series.

With this first project, Game Labs wished to give birth to a new strategy brand that would gradually evolve and expand into different eras.

Every great once in a while, disparate roads can converge to create a new reality. In the case of Norb Tempko’s PC game Scourge of War: Gettysburg this has proven to be true again. By building on a tremendous legacy established with his work at Mad Minute games, Mr. Tempko has struck out on his own and independently released this game which should easily set the standard for all Civil War wargames. To go independent as a software developer in this economy is certainly a gamble. To compound the risk, he tackled the most often studied battle to take place in this hemisphere. His reward for such audacity is evidently this: he has created a stunningly impactful game which should please casual strategy gamers as well as discerning Civil War buffs everywhere. The game’s impact is so powerful because it not only delivers precisely on critical issues such as topography and historical accuracy; it has the benefit of an evolved gameplay system which allows for a fluid and dynamic battlefield environment.

In gaming, as in life, first impressions are critical. The first impression I had upon receiving the package in the mail was, “First rate—this could be good.” The packaging for the CD, and its contents, were indeed promising but I was still hesitant. As a Civil War historian and gamer, I have been gaming this battle for many years, but most experiences have been disappointing. There have been many haphazard and downright awful games that have come to market and few have been able to do this nation’s most critical land battle much justice. So imagine my surprise when I loaded this game. Civil War photos and quotes are present to set an anticipatory mood while the game readies. This would be the first of many small touches that so distinguish this game. Shortly, the player is transported onto a 3D battle arena that has enough topographical detail to please any avid historian. Place names from history such as McPherson’s Ridge, The Devils’ Den, and The Peach Orchard all come graphically alive. Again, the graphics package is superb as is the sound quality. Begin battle and you will hear the crack of musketry, the wind rippling authenticated battle flags and see the immense smoke clouds which so characterized the 19th Century Battlefield. This battlefield environment is unfailingly lush and alluring.

The playability of Scourge of War: Gettysburg is also one of its strongest assets. This is latest a new game engine called Scourge of War. Informally the gaming community has dubbed it “the next iteration of the Take Command! System,” though technically that is not the case. The Scourge of War System allows for the player to control the strategy of every unit from the Corps level down. However, this level of interaction can be challenging to players. Indeed, issuing orders haphazardly in this game can lead to disastrous results; as in battle, there are simply too many things happening all around you to allow you to focus on any individual unit for too long. The Scourge of War System is an honest yet unforgiving one. If mishandled, your units will suffer grievously. Master it and you will come closer to experiencing command in the Civil War than any other game currently available. One of those things to concern you is not that your orders may not be followed; thanks to an ingenious Courier System, which is used to deliver battlefield orders to units, those orders may not even be received. I have seen dispatch riders get blown to smithereens, and have watched others ride perilously close to the enemy ranks only to be summarily shot. Add to those souls the riders that I can only assume got lost, and you may begin to feel a measure of the realistic tactical confusion found in the game. Locking the camera view to that of the tactical commander also adds to the pulse-pounding sense of immersion that can occur while playing Scourge of War: Gettysburg. (I would, however, humbly submit a recommendation for the development team. Please consider adding a “Shoot Courier!” command to the game menu. It could have come in very handy during one particular scenario).

Of course, the element which truly distinguishes the game is the ambitious level of historical accuracy which they have attained in this game. Truly, this game was written with the Historian in mind. The level of detail is flat-out stunning. Each unit is rated due to its known historical prowess, and the better units behave accordingly. Highly realistic Unit Flags and unit-distinctive uniforms are the order of the day. For any avid Civil War buff, the ability to see units such as the fabled Iron Brigade coming along wearing their distinctive black hats should be worth the cost of the game itself. The game comes with all of the major battle sites, as well as an intriguing “What If?…” scenario featuring the divisions of mighty Stonewall Jackson. The game also allows for non-historical scenarios, which are entirely hypothetical. Particular care has been given to scenarios featuring cavalry operations. The units in this battle fought primarily as dismounted cavalry, and as such they exhibit unique characteristics and firepower which demonstrates their peculiar status as hybrid units. The topography of the battlefield is spot on. Given the differing topographical conditions found on the wide-ranging battlefield, their impact on the battles are critical. New patches also bolster artillery effects to more realistically reflect ballistic impact vis-à-vis unit formation. Here again, the key goal of the game is historic realism, and their work has paid off handsomely.

When the men of Major General Henry Heth reached Marsh Creek and opened fire on the arrayed troopers of Brigadier General John Buford’s First Cavalry Brigade, they ignited both the three-day Battle of Gettysburg and endless years of debate among historians. Indeed, the study of Gettysburg is fundamental to any military historian. Given that Norb Tempko chose this classic battle to launch his independent company, it is amazing that he seems to have created a classic. The game Scourge of War: Gettysburg offers a chance for both the casual PC wargamer and the avid historian to experience the challenge of command at that critical battle. The multi-player environment is where the game comes to life as the competition there is excellent and very fun. The dual attention given by the entire development team to painstaking detail and instinctive gameplay pays off handsomely for the gamer.
